Work place Changes
By Brian Lynn Bentley
Coloado Technical Univerisity
Work place has changed alot since my first day of work. so many changes technical, evniromental and communication. and even better employe relations. Lets start with Human resources we have more rules to make it more confortable for employees to deal with eachother such as equal right laws and harrasment policies. which of course makes all of us on our best behavior. In the old days you could harrass people of oppisite gender or same gender with little or no reprucussions, now any type of crude beahvior like that could jeapordize your livelyhood. And office politics will make things not run as well as it should. It is good that employees now have ways to adress this issue and companies take these complainst seriously and will be investigated bu internal sources or external sources.
Work Place design is another thing that never existed with my first job or even a kid. The 1980s came along and more people were using computers not just secrataries or engineers. and from constnar sitting in little tiny cubicles in an airtight building turned out to be bad for our health back problems and carpal tunnel syndrome took off. Air tight buildings with poor ventilations made the work force sicker. which broguht forth the science of ergonmics.
ERGONOMICS: an applied science concerned with the characteristics of people that need to be considered in designing things that they use in order that people and things will interact most effectively and safely—called also human engineering, human factors engineering(merriam webster medical dictionary)
Thanks to that science we have better air conditioning filter systems, exercices and fancy lookign chairs and keyboards that are designed around and for the human body.
Communication has also changed in the last few years, we are global now and a western union no longer exist and it did it would no longer be usable. we now we have email, cell phones instant messaging online board rooms telecomuting satalite and portable computing. so you rnever out of reach even when you are not working you can work. If an emergancy happens or some one needs to understand something you did you are alwaysin reach,You no longer have to rush to work in your car some jobs you can do from the beach on vacation or chasing your kid around the living room. You have technicaly have a whole office in you rpocket right now called a cell phone it can do video it can search the web you can send quick messages with a lap top computer so many public places have free wifi now so you can accomplish the task at hand while waiting for a meal. It even effects how many hours you put in at the office bare minimum or maximum. Can go into work for a few hours for a staff meeting or you can do it over the internet with skype and meetup and other programs like that.
Hours have change slightly as most of us depending on our job and field can dictate our own hours, However some of us choose to work a few hours and some of us work 40 or more on purpose to pay for the house or fear of losing a job or even showing off to the boss that you are a hard worker. The problem with More hours and a faster paced work pace stress and psychological issues have developed that we did not use to have to such an extent in the early days.
Management has even changed in the 1980s they gutted middle managers , we seem to have not enough top too many in the middle and not enough in the bottom. We started goign towards positive thinking encoruagment kind of leadership like we see on tv with thos emotivational speakers."You can do it, dress for success, fake it till you make it." all those slogans were designed to motivate employees. At the same time they started changing management styles and started to incllude the employees as part of the proccess or let them think they were with TQM.
Total Quality Management (TQM) is a management is all about culture appeareance motivation and customers in an attempt to satisfy everyones needs.
Work will continue to change as technology ,medicine ergonmics, enviromental and people change and work needs to get done faster and faster some things will become exxctinct some things will advance untill they are unrecognizable devices. Workplace has evolved and will always be evolving. just like we no longer have buggy makers becuase of the car. Here are a few things you rarely hear anymore from the work place of the past, Typewriter return bell, the 9600 hundred baud modem with its musical sounds of connecting and the windows 95 start up tune.
