The difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
What is our cognitive function that has to do with motivation? How we think and how we are motivated by how we think and behind what makes us move. All about Intrinsic and extrinsic what is the difference?
Extrinsic motivation
Extrinsic motivation is where you and I are driven by outside rewards such as incentives. Some examples would be fame, money even" at boy or at a girl" is a simple example of extrinsic motivation. It is an external stimulus that motivates you and me to do better or a grocery store will offer a sale or coupons to motivate you to come to their store and the external incentive is to save money. I am motivated when I can to get my home work in on time to get a good grade which does not always work but I try and aim for that because the good grade is my external stimuli which of course in turn will boost my ego and narcissism to annoying levels. It refers to things outside our selves that direct our behavior towards goals and rewards. (Cherry,K (nd), (Kaplan, A. 2010).
Intrinsic motivation
Now the second type of intrinsic motivation are things such as reward that give people some sort of internal return on their own feelings, to acquire new skills to make oneself feel whole wanting to learn or do something new for a feeling of wellbeing is an internal motivation. It is what we do in order to receive rewards or avoid punishments it is something we are motivated to do because we like and enjoy it. Intrinsic interest from inside use are us doing things we enjoy and want to do and there does not have to be any visible or outside reward to be motivated by intrinsic motivations. For self-esteem reasons when we are challenged when we solve that puzzle or for me after 20 years finally figured out that rubics cube thing. Or we are just very curious about what’s in that box. There are so many internal motivations and they all fall under intrinsic motivations. (Cherry, K. 2005)., (Kaplan, A. 2010),
Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
I am so motivated by getting a visible reward such as the degree. but I am also driven at the same time by internal motivations to do well for several reasons one it makes me feel good inside when I get a good grade and not so good when I get a bad grade. But I also want a high paying job so I have no worries so that’s another extrinsic motivation for me. I am very interested mostly out of curiosity in my major that’s why I took it to solve my curiosity and understand mental disorders and psychology in general which is internal. But I want my own little office and a nice little log cabin on a hill overlooking a private lake. And that is my extrinsic motivation for wanting all this. So I actually think I am currently more intricacy motivated then outwardly but as I get closer to that degree I think it will change and my external motivations will drive my internal ones.
Motivating employees
The best way to motivate an extrinsically motivated employee is to offer incentives like promotions, bonuses or a raise if conditions A, B and C are met. Sometimes even a present and motivate these people. Sometimes offering the same incentives over and over again kills the incentive motivation. for examples rewarding someone a praise for being praised is probably not a good motivator, you have to keep the incentives fresh to keep one interested and also from being bored.
